Stumperies are artful arrangements of fallen timber that accommodate insects, insectivores, plants… and people.

Using a seed grant of £800 from Ballymore Developers, Bards on Boats kickstarted a community-based effort in August to create a stumpery behind the Sainsburys at Ladbroke Grove. The Stumpery exemplifies a tradition popularized by Victorian gardeners. And because it requires neither hard infrastructure nor disturbance to the underlying ground, complements developers’ plans to build a new Superstore there in 3-5 years as part of Ballymore Developers’ Kensal Canalside project which will see 3500 new flats and a restoration of the old coal drops at Portobello Basin #1.
